I have on occasion recommended the excellent book Governing the Commons by Elinor Ostrom (Nobel prize winner in economics, and the only woman to have done so), most especially to those interested in the management of natural resources and the role of government regulation. The book is very accessible and presents many real-world examples of successful and failed management, giving a more nuanced view of the so-called “tragedy” of the commons.

Now, (the essence of) this book is available in an even more accessible format: a six-minute youtube video!

The succeeding video discusses the specific case of the decline of Atlantic cod off the Grand Banks.

These videos, like the others on the channel, are well-researched and thought out and an excellent model of how lay-science should be. Watch!
